When I was in my mother’s womb some forty years ago
The frothing darkness was distance itself.
I was hurled into a sea that was distant and incomprehensible.

In the distance the flowers bloom,
In the distance the birds fly,
In the distance the heavens are high,
In the distance the wind blows,
In the distance the leaves fall,
In the distance it is snowing, and
Even further in the distance that light shines.

All the things in life are in the distance.
Even when they are close enough to grab, we cannot hold on to them.
Not for a moment, not even for a microsecond, do they stand still.
We are finite creatures who cannot help but long for the mystery
That seems distant but eternal, the way man and woman long for each other.
Today, even the crying of my child sounds so distant.
It is so far in the distance. Do I really have to draw closer?
It seems like I have been running for so long. Why does that distance not decrease?
Will that distant mystery I am looking at in this moment stay the same and wait for me?
When there is no end to these thoughts, the shutter clicks on the profound thirst in my heart.

― From the photographer’s notebook  ( translation / David Carruth )
